Agaricus extract

Agaricus blazei · generally in the literature Agaricus subrufescens

Product specifications At least 30% polysaccharides

We make our Agaricus extract from the fruiting body and process it using hot-water extraction. It contains at least 30% total polysaccharides, with an average content of approximately 33–34%. We offer it in plant-based capsules.

02 / DETAILED PRODUCT INFORMATION

From Agaricus to extract

Agaricus is an edible gilled mushroom with a long history as food. The extract is made from the fruiting body: the visible mushroom. During processing, hot water is used to extract and concentrate soluble polysaccharides and other components from the mushroom material.

01

Origin, names and history

The mushroom became known through the area around Piedade in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. In the 1960s, the species attracted interest from Japanese researchers and growers; its Japanese name Himematsutake became internationally known.

Our Agaricus is known as Agaricus blazei. You may also encounter this species under the names Agaricus brasiliensis and, in modern taxonomy, generally Agaricus subrufescens. Other common names include Royal Sun Agaricus, almond mushroom and, in Brazil, cogumelo do sol.

This species grows in organically rich soil in a warm climate. The fruiting bodies have a pale stem and a beige to light-brown cap that is often scaly.

02

Cultivation and raw materials used

To cultivate our Agaricus, we use a blended substrate of organic straw, natural fertilizers, wheat bran, ground organic corn, gypsum and chalk. This serves solely as a growing medium for the mushroom and is not added to the capsules as an ingredient.

For our extract, we use only the fruiting body, without ground-up grain substrate or mycelium powder. The origin and composition of the raw material are important quality characteristics; the relevant specifications and analyses determine the exact values for a production batch.

03

Constituent profile

The fruiting body contains various carbohydrates and polysaccharides, including alpha- and beta-glucans. Researchers also study proteins, amino acids, dietary fiber, ergosterol, minerals and other mushroom-specific compounds present in the species.

Our standardization of at least 30% refers to total polysaccharides, not 30% beta-glucans. Determining the beta-glucan content requires a separate laboratory analysis. Furthermore, the final composition of a hot-water extract depends on which substances are released and retained during processing.

04

Extraction and standardization

In hot-water extraction, mushroom material is treated with water to release water-soluble constituents. The extract is then concentrated and dried into powder so it can be packaged in capsules.

The raw material undergoes a fermentation stage followed by hot-water extraction. Exact processing conditions may vary between production runs. We specify at least 30% total polysaccharides and an average content of approximately 33–34%; the exact percentage for each production batch is determined by appropriate analysis.

What does a 30% polysaccharide standard mean?

At least 30% of the extract's weight consists of compounds measured as total polysaccharides. At 300–350 mg of extract per capsule, this mathematically corresponds to at least 90–105 mg of polysaccharides. This is a calculation based on our minimum standard, not an individual capsule measurement or an indicator of a proven health effect.

03 / PREPARATION AND USE

Composition and use

What is in the capsule?

We package Agaricus extract without fillers or added grain, starch or mycelium powder in plant-based pullulan capsules. Pullulan is produced by fermentation and offers an alternative to gelatin or HPMC capsules.

Our formulation contains no added preservatives, synthetic colors, fragrances or flavorings, caffeine, ephedrine, gluten, soy, lactose, sugar or genetically modified ingredients. In the case of an allergy or specific intolerance, the current label and available allergen and batch information are always decisive.

How do you use Agaricus?

Daily use: 2–3 capsules per day.

Personal usage schedule: 4–6 capsules per day, optionally combined with other recommended mushrooms.

Take with a glass of water on an empty stomach.

  • 30 minutes before or approximately 90 minutes after a meal.
  • Acerola is a natural source of vitamin C. Increasing vitamin C intake while taking mushrooms is recommended to enhance their effects. Natural vitamin C helps the body absorb important substances more effectively. View the description and product information.
  • Would you like to enhance the effects of mushrooms? In that case, I recommend Chaga infusion to drink. Prepare the infusion with water at 70–80 °C and let it steep according to the historical recipe. View the full recipe in the description.
  • When combining mushrooms, use no more than three or four species.
  • For sustained results, use the same mushroom for at least two to three months.
  • If you take medication, always consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage

Store Agaricus in its tightly closed packaging, in a dry, dark place out of the reach of children, at 10–25 °C. Also follow the storage instructions on the label.

04 / CONSTITUENTS AND RESEARCH

What is known about its effects?

Agaricus and its polysaccharides are studied for their chemical properties and possible interactions with biological systems. Laboratory research on a substance, however, does not establish a proven health benefit of a dietary supplement in humans. Findings for one extract or dosage cannot simply be applied to another product.

Polysaccharides and beta-glucans

Laboratory studies investigate the structure, solubility and biological interactions of these carbohydrates. The fractions present depend, among other factors, on the species, the raw material used and the extraction method.

Research into cellular processes

Experiments using Agaricus fractions examine, among other things, how cellular receptors recognize glucans and the associated signaling pathways. Such experiments help explore research questions but do not demonstrate that these capsules support users’ immune systems.

Human studies

A few relatively small clinical studies have investigated different Agaricus preparations. They differ in product, dose, participant group and outcomes studied. Their findings are neither consistent nor sufficient to support general health claims for this extract.

What this means for choosing a product

When comparing extracts, factors such as a verifiable species name, the part of the mushroom used, the extraction method and laboratory measurements are relevant. A higher total polysaccharide percentage does not automatically mean better absorption or stronger effects.
